Through his lawyer, Erman Umar, graft suspect Wafid Muharram has admitted he met with Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin several times last year.
“My client met Nazaruddin once at his office and once outside the office,” Erman said Wednesday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
The statement contradicts Nazaruddin earlier claim that he "never knew anyone by the name of Wafid”.
Nazaruddin’s name was first mentioned by Mindo Rosa Manullang, another suspect involved in the case.
Earlier, during her preliminary questioning Manullang had said repeatedly that she was ordered by Nazaruddin to accompany Muhammad El Idris, who works for PT Duta Graha Indah, to pay a Rp 3.2 billion bribe to Wafid Muharram, secretary to the youth and sports affairs minister.
The money was allegedly paid as a kickback to Wafid after he helped pave the way for the company to win a building construction tender worth Rp 197 billion for the upcoming SEA Games.
